How ‘the project’ began:
The good home project was established in 2016 when two friends, Narelle Huggins and Rachel Chamberlain, met and found a commonality in their stylistic sensibilities and a desire to use traditional crafts in contemporary ways.
Our contemporary interpretation of classic techniques is expressed through the joyful, relaxed, and sometimes abstract, nature of our designs to compliment modern family living. We are also driven by an interest in mid 20th century design. Our screen prints are reminiscent of this period with stylised botanical patterns and drawings of mid century objects.
Handmade for your home:
We hold a strong belief that ‘ordinary’ homes can be made unique through what we put in them. Our own homes’ collections of mid-century furniture are complimented with timeless handmade crafts to create our own special look. Our Cambridge based New Zealand homes also provide our work spaces and the testing ground for our creations as depicted in many of our catalogue photos.
Initiated with our shared interest in up-cycled materials and mid century design, this collaboration is an ongoing exploration of handmade. We continue to hone and learn new skills whilst creating products such as those featured on this site. We hope that our passion for things handmade might bring a little joy to your life as well. The ‘Good Home’ products can be found in our online store and at a select number of stockists on the north island of New Zealand.
What is in a name?
Good, we believe, is the rather unsung hero of adjectives. Good means not just valuable, worthwhile or acceptable, as a measure of quality or standard, but also describes an underlying character. To be good is not just the portrayal of an outward appearance, but authentic goodness that comes from within. To be good is to be trustworthy and genuine, and , if you like, has a purity to it. The good home project is not just a name, but an aspiration. Our product focus is: ‘handmade for your home’, our inspiration coming largely from our own homes. We describe it as ‘the project’ because it is a journey of discovery. We invite you along on this journey with us, through the enjoyment of some of our ‘good’ products or through ‘the project’ inspiring you to also learn new skills and explore the world of handmade.
xx Narelle & Rachel
