The good home project hand makes contemporary home décor, toys and gifts using traditional sewing, knitting, crochet, weaving and embroidery skills. Our own families and the desire to make handmade toys and child-friendly home decor inspire many of our products. We also have a particular interest in up-cycling materials, like old jeans and woollen blankets, in products such as our soft toys and furnishings.
Working from our Cambridge NZ homes, we are regularly found at the monthly Tamahere Country Market as well as establishing this online store.
How ‘the project’ began:
The day that Rachel and I met, only one and a half years ago, I declared to my husband that evening in an excited tone with a child like animated face, ‘I have met my real life ‘pin twin’!!!’ He possibly looked at me slightly blankly, partly trying to comprehend what a ‘pin twin’ was, and partly why this had caused me to speak in a girlish squeal-like fashion! (I am assuming that most would understand that a ‘pin twin’ is a phrase coined by Pinterest to describe someone who shares your decorating and visual sensibilities.) And whilst the good home project operates in a social media world, you could say that both Rachel and I are a little old fashioned in that we work most effectively in the ‘real world’; we like to touch things, see things in person, make things with our hands. Hence why finding a ‘pin twin’ who was not just connected by social media, but lived ‘just up the road’ was an extraordinary discovery. The key indicator to this declaration was that we could probably quite happily exchange everything in each of our houses and still feel that our design and style preferences were realised. The disadvantage of this would be that we should probably not go thrift shopping together, as we might try to muscle each other out of the way to get our hands on that circa 1960’s sideboard! However, through our common interest in handmade projects, up-cycled materials and mid century furniture and design our collaborative project has begun. A project which is an ongoing exploration of new ideas and ‘spinning’ off each other to come up with products such as those featured on this site. We hope that our passion for things handmade might bring a little joy to your life as well. x Narelle
What is in a name?
Good, we believe, is the rather unsung hero of adjectives. Good means not just valuable, worthwhile or acceptable, as a measure of quality or standard, but also describes an underlying character. To be good is not just the portrayal of an outward appearance, but authentic goodness that comes from within. To be good is to be trustworthy and genuine, and , if you like, has a purity to it.
Wowsers! Have we set ourselves a mighty task! The good home project is not just a name, but an aspiration. Our product focus is: ‘handmade for your home’, our inspiration coming from our own homes and families. We describe it as ‘the project’ because it is a journey, an ongoing mission of discovery. We invite you along on this journey with us, through the enjoyment of some of our ‘good’ products or through ‘the project’ equipping you with new skills and a desire to explore the world of handmade.
